Louisville, Ky. (Nov. 26, 2001) - Fresno State senior quarterback David Carr has been selected as the recipient of the 2001 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the nation's top senior collegiate quarterback by the Frank Camp Chapter of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation. Carr leads the NCAA in passing yards (3,876) and passing touchdowns (36), completing 288 of 450 passes this year. With one game remaining at Utah State on Saturday, he is within reach of becoming only the sixth player in NCAA history to throw 1 of 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in a season. He is third nationally in total offense, averaging 330.4 yards a game. "I was in the league for five years and David has what it takes to be a great player in the NFL," said Fresno State head coach Pat Hill. "He has all of the physical tools, he is smart and he is extremely tough." A 6-3, 225-pound senior from Bakersfield, Ca., Carr has led No. 21 Fresno State to a 10-2 record. He has thrown for over 300 yards in nine of the Bulldogs' 12 games. Carr was chosen for the award from a list of senior quarterbacks that had been narrowed to five finalists on Oct. 31, a group which also included Eric Crouch (Nebraska), Joey Harrington (Oregon), Kurt Kittner (Illinois) and Zak Kustok (Northwestern).
